🔴 TUESDAY 19TH NOV - DAY OF THE MARCH TO PARLIAMENT / FINAL DAY OF HIKOI PROTEST

Updated as of 9.26am Tues

HIKOI IS NOW ON THE MOVE FROM WAITANGI PARK TO PARLIAMENT AS AT 9.25AM

Convoy will leave from 6am from Takapuwahia Marae Porirua (it’s not known now whether they will go down SH59, down through Porirua and along Kenepuru Drive to Tawa, then up Middleton Road to Johnsonville, OR down SH1 Urban Motorway from Linden to Ngauranga to Waitangi Park via Aotea Quay.) IF the convoy heads down through Porirua, through Tawa and Johnsonville, they will connect from Johnsonville onto SH1 Ngauraunga Gorge at around 7.30am, down the gorge and, it’s assumed, they’ll then get off at the offramp to head along Old Hutt Road, through Thorndon Quay, along Jervois and Customhouse Quays/ Cable St to Waitangi Park in Wellington. It is unknown if they will continue along SH1 Urban Motorway, or had along Old Hutt Rd / Thorndon Quay. They expect to arrive at Waitangi Park before 9am. We don’t have any solid information about this stint of the protest heading into the city unfortunately. (someone may be able to email us with the info please - trafficpagenz@gmail.com)

MAIN CONVOY HAS ALREADY REACHED WAITANGI PARK IN THE CITY. STILL DRIBS AND DRABS OF THE PUBLIC COMING INTO TOWN, MOSTLY BY TRAIN. All live updates are over on our traffic reports page (link at the top of this page)

Officially beginning their activation at Waitangi Park from 9am (although they will most likely be there earlier). To be honest, we don’t know proper times here. Originally the activation was beginning at 9am at Waitangi Park, but now they’re saying the Hikoi will leave Waitangi Park in the city at around 9am. This is the latest info we have - that the hikoi through the city will begin at 9am. The confirmed route for the hikoi to Parliament is down Kent Terrace/ Courtenay Place/Manners St/ Willis Street/Lambton Quay to Parliament Grounds, arriving at parliament at 12pm. It doesn’t take 3 hours to walk to Parliament so it’s imagined that the hikoi will leave Waitangi Park around 10.30-11am, possibly earlier. Officially from midday there is the final protest on the Parliament lawn for a few hours. The hikoi will then head back to Waitangi Park at 2.30pm via normal pedestrian footpaths (not disrupting traffic) for a concert and farewell at 4pm, finally ending the whole protest and dispersing after 7pm.

Further to this, a big group will be gathering at McEwan Park, Petone at 3.30am on Tuesday morning. From 4am they will hikoi (on foot) down Petone Esplanade on the footpath, down SH2 using the walkway next to the road, and down to Ngauranga Interchange, where they will then take Old Hutt Rd through to Thorndon Quay, arriving at the Wellington Train Station at around 8.30am. No people will be walking on the motorway from Petone, but there will be vehicles driving slow in one lane alongside the walkers who will be on the walkway down to Ngauranga. They will then meet up with the rest of the convoy as it comes through, at Waitangi Park.

In Wairarapa, a group is expected to travel over Remutaka Hill via car to Wellington City to join the main contingent. No times have been supplied here, but assuming they may leave Featherston around 7-7.30am Tuesday.

There will be extra train carriages added to trains on Tuesday between 9am-3pm, the Capital Connection train is set to see heaps more passengers in the morning, plus others coming by car to the city on Tuesday morning. Parking is expected to be extremely difficult to come by. The Wellington Station bus hub will be closed, with buses diverted to nearby locations.

Things to remember:

  • The times expected through the towns are approximate, give or take 30 mins

  • When going through main streets of towns, the convoy tends to break into people on foot, and vehicles travelling behind at walking pace, then back into vehicles to the next town. They will be in vehicles heading down Ngauranga Gorge but mostly likely walking from Ngauranga along through Thorndon Quay to Waitangi Park with vehicles behind

  • If you are going to the hospital or airport, stick to SH1 through Terrace Tunnel etc, avoiding the central city where there will be congestion

We have done our best to collate the info from several sources with locations and times. If you have any questions about the hikoi, times etc - please get in touch with the organizers. We will keep a very close eye on the roads during these times and will be updating you, our best and quickest updates will be on our separate website at www.TheTrafficFox.co.nz - so best to sign up to that to get our premium reports!

IF YOU'RE IN DOUBT ABOUT IF THIS EVENT WILL AFFECT YOUR APPOINTMENTS, FLIGHTS OR OTHER PLANS, RE-SCHEDULE IF YOU CAN, AVOID THESE AREAS ALL TOGETHER, OR PLAN WELL AHEAD. IF YOU DON’T NEED TO BE IN THE CITY ON TUESDAY, THEN DON’T BE!

From 9am, the roads below will be closed to vehicles. Roads will reopen in stages as the hikoi progresses towards Parliament.

EARLIER INFO IN THE LEAD UP TO THE WELLINGTON STINT OF THE PROTEST:

🔴 SATURDAY 16TH NOV

Convoy leaves Hastings around 12pm and travels to Palmerston North via SH2 then over Saddle Road. Powhiri is at 6pm at Te Marae o Hine, staying the night at Te Hotu Manawa O Rangitāne O Manawatū Marae which is on Maxwells Line. It's not known yet if the convoy will be on foot through towns like Dannevirke, Woodville etc before getting to the powhiri at 6pm (someone may be able to comment or message me)

⚫ SUNDAY 17TH NOV

* Live updates as of 3pm at the bottom of this Sunday section

*updated times here as of 11am Sunday

Convoy has left Palmerston North as at 12pm. It is coming down through SH56 Longburn to Opiki, then down SH57 to Levin. From around 1pm the convoy will convene at Tyne St Service Lane to park up. SH1 will be closed from Tyne St down to Bath St during this time, when the hikoi will march down SH1/ Oxford St, turn at Bath St lights (by New World) and head to Levin Domain for a powhiri at around 1pm). Easy detours here either side of SH1 Levin, but it's suggested to use (for northbound) Durham St, Weraroa Rd, Kawiu Rd back onto SH1. Vice versa for southbound (all ok routes for heavy vehicles).

*changes to this section as of Sunday morning* The convoy has to now be in Porirua for the powhiri at 4pm, not 6pm. So the times below for leaving Levin, going past Otaki and through Waikanae and Paraparaumu may be an hour earlier or so, very little information about this, someone may be able to message me confirmation and solid info, not gossip. Apparently convoy hitting Waikanae on Old SH1 from 2.30pm onwards, so these times below will most likely be an hour or so earlier than we've got posted:

Convoy leaving Levin at around 2pm to head down SH1 to Otaki - now here it's a bit different. The convoy will be passing by the Otaki township on SH1 and not entering the town itself due to roadworks. The convoy will however be driving past Otaki on the expressway doing around 50kmh, at around 1.30pm. This will affect traffic on the expressway for around 10 mins. There will be a hikoi on foot from the people within Otaki - they will gather at the Otaki train station on Arthur St at around 12.30-1pm and then at 1.30pm, march up Old SH1 to Pare o Matangi Reserve (opposite BP, on Rahui Road). Police are on hand to close this section of road for the 30 mins or so. Watch for people on foot on the over-bridges at Rahui Rd, Otaki Gorge Rd etc.

*the timing of this info below has most likely changed to be an hour or so earlier, as the powhiri at Porirua is now 4pm, not 6pm

The car convoy, once slowly driven past Otaki then carries on down SH1 then pulls off to Waikanae on Old SH1 and goes through the town at 2pmish, through Paraparaumu at 2.20pmish, back onto SH1 til Mackays Crossing and on to Porirua (via SH59) to make it in time for a 4pm powhiri (earlier it was 6pm) at Takatuwahia Marae in Porirua (Ngatitoa Street) to stay overnight.

** Hikoi has just shut down SH1 Levin / Oxford Street as at 1.25 They will now walk along to Bath St (by New World) then on to Levin Domain. Detour for the next 30 mins on either side of SH1 through Levin itself

As at 3.40pm, convoy on way down SH1 leaving Levin now. Super slow and southbound barely moving. Clogged from Kuku back through Levin township at the moment

As at 4.15pm, convoy is slowly coming through Manakau but mostly still back at Kuku, as a lot of cars travelling at walking pace

As at 4.40pm, not much progress. Still a big delay from Kuku back to Hokio Beach Rd in Levin. Now affecting those coming from SH57 Kimberley to join SH1. It seems the convoy is suuuuper stretched out, with some already having gone through Otaki and some already nearing Porirua

As at 4.50pm - the convoy seems suuuuuper spread out and not a core group anymore, just dribs and drabs of cars with flags heading south from Manakau now. Some has already gone through Kapiti, some are already in Porirua

As at 5.15pm - the convoy is super spread out and not a core group anymore, just dribs and drabs of cars with flags heading south from Otaki now. Some has already gone through Kapiti, some are already in Porirua

As at 5.30pm apparently all participants are at or nearly at Porirua already. No more updates til tomorrow now

⚪ MONDAY 18TH NOV

This is a preparation and rest day in Porirua with no planned public action for the core convoy group. In Wairarapa, residents and motorists can expect disruption as a local group gathers to hikoi through Masterton, Carterton and Greytown throughout the day, beginning at 9am and travelling south. This group is expected to travel to Wellington City on Tuesday to join the main contingent.
