Seltos unboxes as bigger kind of small

New engines, extra technology and more room for your shopping.

STILL categorised as a small sports utility, but in dimension a little less so.

That’s the second-generation of Kia’s Seltos, just unveiled internationally, replacing a model that’s been around since 2019.

Moving to a new platform means larger proportions. The wheelbase is 60mm longer at 2690mm, at 4430mm it becomes 45mm longer, and is also 30mm wider, now at 1830mm. It also sits lower, with a height of 1600mm.

Taking obvious cues from Kia’s EV-add-numeric family electric cars, the new body - sitting atop the K3 platform also used by the Hyundai Kona - is roomier for occupants and whatever you put into the boot. Cargo capacity increases from 498 litres to 536 litres.

Also inbound are new powertrains.

First into production are a pair of 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines but a hybrid is set to join in early 2026.

The entry pure petrol is called the ‘Standard Output’ version. It produces 132kW of power and 265Nm of torque, and will be available with either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The alternate ‘High Output’ has the same torque, but lifts to 142kW. It marries to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic.

Kia has also indicated the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that has featured in the current car will keep on, wit the same outputs of 110kW and 179Nm. It matches up to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Front- and all-wheel drive configurations will continue to be offered. Some variants are on torsion beam rear suspension, some on multi-link independent.

Kia predictably says the new platform delivers improved ride, handling, and stability, along with greater body rigidity and improved noise insulation.

The boxy new look has a bespoke headlight signature, but the interior is where greater change comes. It now has dual 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and instruments, along with a dedicated third panel for climate control.

Kia has also introduced a ChatGPT-powered AI voice assistant. The car also supports over-the-air updates and ‘digital key’ smartphone functionality.

A new X-Line variant will join the family; it delivers with additional sporty vibe so will have exclusive matte paint choices.

When can you see it? Kia NZ as per its convention has offered no comment. However, our usual product-sharing partner, Kia Australia, is suggesting late 2026.
